Takes place at a salon called Betsy's. Betsy's is considered the best nail and hair salon in the whole city. It's where everyone knows everyone and everything about each other.
(Betsy is about finished Rachel's hair. She's just playing with it now so she can finish the gossiping.)
Betsy
Rachel honey you look fabulous. What magic fingers I have. (taking the black cover off of Rachel's neck. Both of them are walking over to the cash stand.)
Goodness I still can't believed that happened. It's nasty and it's the funniest thing I've ever heard.
Rachel
I know. But you didn't hear this from me (pointing her perfectly french manicure at Betsy)
Betsy
Pshh don't worry. My lips are sealed.
(Betsy walking Rachel out. You can hear the bells hanging from the door ring as they walk out. Both of them hugging each other like they're never going to see each other again. As soon as Rachel was out Betsy went back to work and pulling the next number from the machine.)
Betsy
Number 232! (looking around)
Carol
That's me! (walks over to Betsy's table and takes her seat)
Betsy
Make yourself comfortable sugar. So tell me anything new?
Carol
Well you know Mandy?
Betsy
(Looks at Carol in shock) Yes, yes spill!
Carol
I hear that she's been messing around at the office.
Betsy
With who? (anxiously waiting for an answer)
Carol
(giving Betsy a look) You know who...
Betsy
Get out! No way! From who?
Carol
Well Brian's sister heard it from Katrina, who told Ellie, who said got it from Missy, who told me at Cubs that Mandy and Jeff was at the Holiday Inn 2 nights ago.
(the door bells chimes while the door swings open. In walks innocent Mandy)
Mandy
Betsy I hope you can help me out. The mister and I have a hot date tonight.
(Carol snickers at Betsy)
Betsy
One second Honey. I'll be right there.
Carol
(talks under her breath) Hot date with the mister huh?
Betsy
(hits carol on the shoulder) Shhh!
Mandy
Oh Hi Carol. I didn't even know you were in here. How have you been? (walks over to Carol and gives her a hug and a kiss on one side of her each cheek)
Carol
I'm doing good Mandy girl. How have you been? Hot date with the mister huh? That sounds exciting.
Mandy
Yea. I can't wait!
Betsy
Alright Honey I'm ready for you.
(Mandy walks over to the styling chair)
Betsy
What can I do for you today?
Mandy
I want something exotic. Something hot so when he sees me tonight it'll make him weak at the knees.
Betsy
So a lather and rinse? A trim? A new color?
Mandy
Yes. All of it. A wash, a trim and a new color!
Betsy
You got it.
Mandy
I can't wait 'til Jeff...I mean Tom sees me. (looking dumbfounded. Hoping no one caught that)
Betsy
So tell me what's new with you? (trying to start small talk while washing Mandy's long brown hair)
Mandy
Well nothing much. Just the usual house wife stuff. You know.
Carol
Hah! Housewife stuff? Now that's funny. (laughing to herself)
(Betsy shushing Carol and trying to keep herself from laughing. Everyone knows that Mandy is the complete opposite from housewife. )
Betsy
Your finally learning how to cook now I see. Well Tom must be treating you right.
Mandy
Oh yes. Jeff, I mean Tom has been really good to me. If you know what I mean.
Betsy

So tell me how has work been? Laying on your back on those hard desk must really take a tole on your back.
Mandy
Girl you just don't know. (thinking about what Carol just said) Laying? You mean sitting on those chairs? Yes it does take a tole on my back.
Carol
No I said laying.
(Betsy trying so hard not to laugh pulled out Mandy's head from under the sink.)
Betsy
How short?
Mandy
Not short at all...oh you mean hair?! (laughing to herself) Just a tad.
Betsy
(looking pretty disgusted) got ya.
(Mandy blushes while Betsy is trimming her hair. Carol's manicure is starting to dry and harden under the cool machine with the cool blue-purple light. For once the Salon was completely silenced. )
Carol
well I think I'm done. (breaking the silence. Getting up from the machine and getting her purse) Thank you so much Betsy. Only you can make me look this good.
Betsy
Awe thanks sweets.
(Carol walking over to Betsy and Mandy giving both of them a hug and saying goodbye.)

Bye ladies. Have a good day. Mandy have fun with the "mister"(air quoting mister while walking out.)

ReplyDeleteI think it would help if the scene was set up a little at the beginning.. Like have someone just getting finished and hearing the very end of some gossipy conversation then she calls over Carol. And then maybe hear the beginning of some gossip with Mandy and Betsy after Carol leaves. So you get this sequence of gossipy conversations.
And I think you could lengthen the important dramatic conversation more. Add more subtle hinty jokes and such. Could really heighten the humor thats already there.
